Description:

The GrEP research group at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra is pleased to announce an 18-month position associated with the project "Prosody, Gesture, and Linguistic Structure" (FFI2012-31995), funded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and by the SGR grant to the Group of Prosodic Studies (AGAUR, Generalitat de Catalunya).

Universitat Pompeu Fabra is a research oriented university located in the centre of Barcelona, with a recognized body of faculty members and international students. The Department of Translation and Language Sciences at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra is listed second for Linguistics in Spain within in the QS World University rankings and among the world's top 150 universities in Linguistics. The MA and PhD programs are home to a wide range of research interests and expertise, including Theoretical Linguistics, Second Language Acquisition and Language Learning, Computational Linguistics, Discourse Studies, and Literacy Studies.

Goals of the Project:
It is well known that a fundamental aspect of successful human communication resides not only in our ability to use structural and lexical patterns, but also prosody and our co-speech gestures. However, little is known about the linguistic mapping between gesture, prosody, and other linguistic structures. Three important goals of the project are the following: (a) the temporal and semantic relationship between prosody and co-speech gestures; (b) the contribution of prosody and gesture to the expression of linguistic and pragmatic meaning; and (c) the impact of prosody and gesture on L1 and L2 acquisition. One of the novelties of the proposal lies in its interdisciplinary approach. We use a combination of methods and techniques such as linguistic and prosodic/gestural analysis, as well as comparative (developmental, cross linguistic) and experimental methods such as eye tracking and brain imaging techniques.

The PhD position is expected to start in September 2015. The position includes a monthly salary and coverage by the Spanish Social Security. The grant has some possibilities to be extended to a 3-year position. Annual renewal of the assistantship will depend upon successful progress within the doctoral program and collaboration on the research project.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The grant holder will become part of the GrEP and UR-LING groups at UPF and will be expected to actively participate in the research activities programmed by the research group, as well as those programmed by the graduate school. The candidate will be encouraged to develop his or her own line of investigation within the research project and actively lead this subproject.

Requirements:
The minimum requirement for applying for the grant is to hold an MA degree in Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Cognitive Science or a related field. The candidate will be expected to carry out his/her PhD project in a theme directly related to the project; thus, to have at least some background in Experimental Linguistics, Psycholinguistics, Pragmatics, and Prosody, will also be considered an asset. Interested candidates should have a good command of English and at least basic knowledge of both Catalan and Spanish, or be ready to acquire both languages upon arrival.

How to Apply:
Students interested in applying please contact Pilar Prieto at pilar.prieto @upf.edu as soon as possible, and preferably no later than January or February 2015. Interested candidates should send a complete CV, a sample research paper, and a brief expression of interest.

Application Deadline: 03-May-2015
