Meeting Description:

It has been almost a century since C. K. Ogden, a linguist, and I. A. Richards, a literary critic, published the provocatively-titled book The Meaning of Meaning, which set the foundations of modern approaches to the ever-intriguing and elusive phenomenon of meaning. Instead of the simplistic straightforward connection between the sign and the referent, their famous triangle as the model of meaning was a step forward in relation to de Saussure’s, by placing more emphasis on the thought, our mind as the locus of meaning construction and meaning interpretation. This widely opened the door for various disciplines which view meaning as something that does not reside with words but with people.

This year, the conference turns to one of the fundamental questions – meaning, as something that is actually expressed, or intended to be expressed, indicated and significant. Following the footsteps of Ogden and Richards and many linguists, literary critics and philosophers inspired by them, we invite contributions which will, from the perspective of literary studies, various linguistic disciplines as well as interdisciplinary approaches with cognitive sciences, philosophy of language, and other social sciences, increase the understanding of how meaning is constructed and (mis) interpreted, taking into consideration various contextual and cultural factors.

Conference fee is 30 Euros (also payable in dinars), covering organisational costs, conference folder, refreshments during coffee breaks, buffet lunch on 24th April, and snacks before the closing of the conference on 25 April.

Conference dinner party (10 Euros) on 24th April 2015 is optional.

Call for Papers:

Language, Literature, Meaning is an annual conference organized by the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Niš, Serbia. The forthcoming conference turns to one of the fundamental questions – meaning, as something that is actually expressed, or intended to be expressed, indicated and significant. Following the footsteps of Ogden and Richards and many linguists, literary critics and philosophers inspired by them, we invite contributions which will, from the perspective of literary studies, various linguistic disciplines as well as interdisciplinary approaches with cognitive sciences, philosophy of language, and other social sciences, increase the understanding of how meaning is constructed and (mis) interpreted, taking into consideration various contextual and cultural factors.

Conference languages are English and Serbian, for 15-minute presentations followed by 5 minute discussion time. If you would like to participate, please send your application no later than January 20th, 2015 to the following address: jkznacenje2015 at gmail.com. Abstracts should be submitted as Word documents (*.doc, *.docx), formatted and prepared according to the following guidelines:

- Name and surname: Times New Roman 12 pt bold, justified
- Title: Times New Roman 12 pt, justified
- Email: Times New Roman 12 pt, justified
- Link with the Institution (e.g. employed, graduate student, undergraduate student
- Title of the abstract: Times New Roman 12 pt, bold, centered, CAPITAL LETTERS
- Body of the abstract: Times New Roman 12 pt, justified, first line indented by 1 cm
- Paper size A4; all margins should be set at 2.5 cm
- Abstracts should be between 100 and 200 words in length

Your application should also contain the following information:

- Place and country of origin
- Planned date and time of arrival
- Planned date and time of departure
- Whether you plan to attend the conference dinner

The submitted abstracts will be reviewed and assessed according to their compatibility with the conference topic and academic merit and notification of acceptance will be sent by February 20, 2015.  A selection of papers will be published after the conference in a peer-reviewed two-volume Conference Proceedings.
