Abstract:

Written in German and Croatian appearing side-by-side, the book
"Modalpartikeln: Deutsch im Vergleich mit dem Kroatischen und
Englischen/Modalne čestice: njemački jezik u usporedbi s hrvatskim i
engleskim" offers a systematic description of the meaning of German modal
particles in comparison with synonymous particles and modal constructions in
Croatian, as well as a selection of English translational equivalents. The
book represents a novelty in the lexicography of both the German and Croatian
language as it contains descriptions of particle meanings based on the context
of their use. The descriptions take into account the type of sentence in which
the particle occurs and the respective speech act. Modal particles are
synsemantic words whose complex meanings depend on the specific context of
their use. They express subjective aspects of the communicative interaction.
All particle descriptions are corpus-based and exemplified by sentences and
dialogues from written and spoken corpora of all three languages. Apart from
offering a linguistic description the book also has the aim to support the
acquisition of modal particles in advanced learners of German and Croatian as
a foreign language. The CD-ROM comprises the content of the book in electronic
form, audio dialogues spoken by native speakers as well as exercises designed
for learning the function and use of modal particles in German and Croatian.
English translational equivalents are listed as an additional help in the
learning process since English is the first foreign language of the majority
of speakers of German and Croatian as L1. The book is aimed at linguists,
philologists, especially at specialists in German and Croatian studies,
translators, teachers and advanced speakers of German and Croatian as foreign
languages.
