Surrey Morphology Group are pleased to announce that funding is available for UK, EU and International candidates wishing to study for a PhD in Linguistics at the University of Surrey, Guildford, UK.

Surrey Morphology Group is a linguistics research centre dedicated to the study of language diversity and its theoretical consequences. Postgraduates studying Theoretical, Descriptive and Typological Linguistics benefit from membership of a community of researchers in the Surrey Morphology Group working on a variety of topics related to linguistic diversity and its consequences for the analysis of grammatical systems. Three different opportunities for funding are available:

- Full AHRC scholarships are available for Home students (resident in the UK for three years). Fees only awards from the AHRC are available for EU students.

- Faculty scholarships are available for Home, EU students, and International students. Full scholarships (Fees and Stipend) are available for Home and Uk applicants. For more information on Faculty scholarships, visit:

Successful International students will be awarded a stipend and receive a substantial discount on the international fees. Please note that full international fees are not covered: candidates should ensure that they are in a position to cover the outstanding costs.

- We also have a AHRC position for a PhD student to undertake fieldwork on Nuer (Nilotic) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as part of an AHRC-funded research project entitled 'Morphological complexity in Nuer'. This full scholarship is open to Home (i.e. UK) students. A fees only scholarship is available to EU students. The closing date for applications is Friday 9th January.

How to Apply:
To be eligible for AHRC or Faculty funding streams (but not the Nuer position), potential applicants need to fill in a short expression of interest form including a 300 word summary of their proposed topic by 9th January 2015:

Potential candidates will then be asked to prepare a proposal no longer than 2000 words in length to submit in support of their application. The strongest applications will show a connection to the interests of the Surrey Morphology Group.

Research in Linguistics at the University of Surrey focuses on the consequences linguistic diversity has for developing theories of language structure and use. The languages and linguistic settings researched cover the entire globe, with specialists documenting and describing the structure and use of familiar and less familiar languages spoken in the Pacific, Asia, the Caucasus, Europe, Africa and the Americas.
Key research areas include:
- Theoretical morphology (including Network Morphology and Paradigm Function Morphology);
- Morphological interfaces;
- Linguistic typology (including Canonical Typology);
- Language Documentation and Description (including Austronesian, Nakh-Daghestanian, Niger-Congo, Nilo-Saharan, Oto-Manguean, Papuan, Slavonic, Tibeto-Burman languages);
