Abstract:

Hoe schreven ‘gewone’ Nederlanders in de late achttiende eeuw? Daarover is nog
niet veel bekend. Onze kennis is voornamelijk gebaseerd op gedrukte teksten
die voor het merendeel geschreven zijn door een klein deel van de (mannelijke)
bevolking afkomstig uit de elite. Dit proefschrift met een sociolinguïstische
invalshoek, zorgt voor een completer beeld van laat-achttiende-eeuws
taalgebruik. Daartoe wordt gebruikt gemaakt van oorlogsbuit: een grote
hoeveelheid door de Engelsen gekaapte brieven, die vandaag de dag bewaard
worden in The National Archives (Kew, Londen). Voor het onderzoek zijn
persoonlijke brieven geselecteerd, geschreven tussen 1776 en 1784 door
Nederlanders uit alle rangen en standen. Deze studie naar taalvariatie in de
late achttiende eeuw kan gezien worden als een eerste verkenning van dit
waardevolle materiaal. De verschijnselen die aan bod komen, zijn dan ook
divers van aard: het gebruik van aanspreekvormen, negatie, wederkerigheid en
wederkerendheid, de apocope van de sjwa, de apocope van de slot-n, het
diminutiefsuffix en de genitief. De verschillende casestudies tonen
onmiskenbaar aan dat geschreven taal in de late achttiende eeuw gevarieerder
was dan eerder onderzoek op basis van gedrukte werken doet vermoeden. Het
sociolinguïstisch perspectief blijkt vruchtbaar te zijn: voor het merendeel
van de verschijnselen wordt sociale variatie aangetroffen en daarbij zijn
vooral gender en sociale klasse invloedrijke factoren. Deze dissertatie is van
belang voor onderzoekers die werkzaam zijn binnen het vakgebied van de
historische sociolinguïstiek en voor iedereen die geïnteresseerd is in
achttiende-eeuws Nederlands.
