Meeting Description:

The aim of the conference is to provide participants with an opportunity
for critical discussion on the different models and approaches to
linguistic research developed within the usage-based perspective. This is a
cross-cutting theme in relation to various subdisciplines of language
sciences (experimental phonology, variational sociolinguistics, corpus
linguistics, cognitive linguistics, historical linguistics) and to the
different levels of language (phonetics and phonology, morphology, syntax,
and semantics).

The conference seeks to identify the essential elements of the usage-based
paradigm, which anchor the analysis to actual language use and its relation
to an 'abstract' system, such as:

- The physical nature of language as acoustic signal, articulatory gesture
and multi-sensorial percept
- Repetition frequency and memory storage of language use experiences
- Production of highly conventionalized or prefabricated sequences as
opposed to traditional language units (phonemes, morphemes, clauses), which
can be accessed directly

Shifting the focus of linguistic observation to these elements makes it
possible to consider language within more general cognitive processes such
as categorization, chunking, storage, analogy, and cross-modal
associations. Moreover, this change of perspective requires a new
reflection on how linguistic categories are represented cognitively, how
they emerge, and whether structures and variability may be explained
through a single adaptive mechanism.

- Marco Baroni: Learning meaning representations from naturally occurring
text and images
- Sonia Cristofaro: Usage-based models in typology: traditional assumptions
and prospects for future research
- Jen Hay - Paul Foulkes: The evolution of medial (-t-) in real and
remembered time
- Adele Goldberg: Constructions: psychological reality, descriptive
adequacy, and typological explanation
- Francesco Vespignani: Principle-based and usage-based features of
psycholinguistic models of sentence comprehension

Call for Papers:

The InterSLI2014 poster session on May 24, 2014 provides an opportunity to
present works-in-progress in an informal setting. Topics of interest are
the same as the research topics in the InterSLI2014 conference. A single
page description should be submitted no later than March 16, 2014.
