The Cardiff School of English, Communication and Philosophy wishes to appoint a senior scholar with an outstanding research record to a Chair in Language and Communication. The successful candidate will be able to provide leadership as a researcher and mentor to colleagues, and contribute to the undergraduate, MA and PhD programmes in English Language and Communication, including our distance PhD programme in Applied Linguistics (Lexical Studies)

Job Description 
 - To play a leading role in enhancing and developing the research culture in the Centre for Language and Communication Research, including the production of top-quality publications, the mentoring of staff, the supervision of postgraduate research students, and increasing capacity on the School’s distance PhD programme in Applied Linguistics (Lexical Studies).
- To contribute as a senior member of staff to the teaching and management of the School’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in English Language and Communication, and to take on other senior management responsibilities consistent with the professorial role
- To play a leading role in public engagement and other activities for the benefit of non-academic audiences.
- To represent the School within and beyond the University, as appropriate.
- To contribute to the pastoral care of students in the School and to act as a personal tutor. 

Person Specification

Essential Criteria  

Expertise/Competence/Skills
1. A portfolio of internationally recognised publications indicative of a capability to enhance the School’s performance in future REF exercises as part of an English Language and Literature return.
2. A record of research funding income, and a demonstrable ability to provide leadership to researchers in the School in stimulating new research and research-funding initiatives. 
3. Research specialisms and general background knowledge of linguistics in areas relevant to the current profile and priorities for teaching and research in the Centre for Language and Communication Research, and including one or more specialisms relevant to the School’s distance PhD programme in Applied Linguistics (Lexical Studies) -- e.g. lexis, language learning and/or attrition, corpus linguistics, quantitative research methods.
4. A capacity to offer research-led teaching in some of the above specialist area(s) and to contribute to other parts of Cardiff Language and Communication programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level

Qualifications (IT/Academic/Vocational)
5. PhD in Linguistics or an appropriate allied discipline
 
Experience
6. Appropriate experience of research-led teaching, including postgraduate level, and of attracting PhD supervisees.
7. Evidence of capability in mentoring and developing the research capacity of junior staff.
