Call Deadline: 31-Jan-2014

Meeting Description:

Corpus linguistics is quickly growing bigger and more sophisticated. Not only are more data and more corpora available, but there has also been a considerable development of the exploitation techniques of those corpora. The third edition of the International Conference on Ibero-Romance Historical Corpora, organised by the Ibero-Romance section of the Romance Languages Seminar of the University of Zürich, aims to put together the latest updates on the development and exploitation of Ibero-Romance languages historical corpora.

As in the last two editions (Mallorca 2007, Barcelona 2011), this conference aims, on the one hand, to encourage the sharing of the latest news in the field of Ibero-Romance historical corpora and, on the other hand, to promote the discussion of the problems and challenges that corpus historical linguistics methodology faces today in Ibero-Romance languages: the composition of corpora, transcription and text presentation standards, access to the manuscripts, philological metadata of the texts (date, geographical origin, etc.), markup languages, lemmatization, grammatical parsing, etc. This edition will focus on the representativeness of the data regarding textual tradition, geographical variation and historical periods.

Confirmed Plenary Speakers:

Inés Fernández-Ordoñez (Madrid)
Andrés Enrique-Arias (Boston-Mallorca)
Guillermo Rojo (Santiago de Compostela)

Other events that will take place during the conference:

- Workshop on computational tools and automatic corpora exploitation techniques offered by Detmar Meurers
- Round table: Current Ibero-Romance Historical Corpora projects
- Poster session and an Ideas Exchange Forum where PhD students would be able to discuss their projects with experts of the field

Conference languages: Ibero-Romance languages, English

Call for Papers:

We are pleased to call for papers that

1) Present new corpora available for the study of Ibero-Romance languages
2) Address some of the problems that corpus linguistics faces regarding the representativeness of the corpora, parsing, exploitation tools, etc., and/or
3) Present case studies that show the theoretical and practical possibilities of the exploitations of Ibero-Romance historical corpora

Abstracts for oral presentations (20 minutes + discussion) and posters may be submitted before January 31, 2014. Abstracts should not exceed 500 words (including references).

Conference languages: Ibero-Romance languages, English
