Meeting Description:

The conference will capture new developments in pragmatics, especially within the field of contextualist approaches to utterance interpretation. The central topic will be how contextual information about the circumstances of the utterance should be represented within a pragmatic theory. Should it be located 'within' the utterance (as unarticulated constituent) or 'outside' as part of the common ground speaker and hearer share? Is the definition of common ground and consequently the ascription of utterance meaning bound essentially to the speaker / hearer perspectives, thus is meaning perspectival?

Generally one may ask whether common ground is something which is given in advance or whether it is something which emerges during the interaction of participants, which are oriented towards salient features of the current situation? Eventually, the ethnological dimension of verbal behavior will be a topic, including the discussion of the nature - culture - distinction.

The conference will capture new developments in pragmatics, including the cultural, social and anthropological preconditions of language use. New research results as well as work in progress may be presented from all areas of pragmatics. The following three general topics will come up during the conference:

- It is self-evident that contextual information about the circumstances of the utterance is crucial for utterance understanding, but it is still open to debate how it has to be represented within a pragmatic theory. Should it be located ‘within’ the utterance (e.g. as ‘unarticulated constituent’) or ‘outside’ as part of the environment speaker and hearer share? Is there an ‘Austinian proposition’ figuring as a domain in which linguistic and contextual information is amalgated?

- Communication is an activity in which participants strive to adjust their perspectives on the surrounding facts and the ongoing interaction in order to maintain or firstly achieve at a joint basis for their communicative interchange. So the question is how the participants arrive at a mutually accepted common ground. Are they cooperative from the beginning or are they oriented egocentrically towards salient features of the situation, whereas common ground is an emergent property of the communication?

- What are the fundamental features of human communication in the sense of culturally grounded behavior? How does human communication develop with regard to pointing and joint attention as early communicative practices between children and adults. Eventually the distinction between action and behavior (or cultural and natural behavior) will be discussed concerning their respective theoretical preconditions.

Conference languages are English and German.
