Meeting Description:

In the last 50 years, the assumption that all languages are inherently variable has guided models that seek to identify the systematic patterns of language variation and their impact on processes of language change. Variationist sociolinguistics is one of these models. Its central principle is that phonetic/phonological, syntactic and semantic differences among different diatopic and diastratic varieties of the same language can be explained by either structural constraints or social factors (Weinreich et al, 1968; Labov, 1972, 1994). 

In the literature on Portuguese, this research program came to be associated with the perspective proposed by, for instance, Tarallo and Kato (1989), that intra-linguistic and cross-linguistic variation may be conceived in the same way, i.e., in terms of a differentiated application of parameters (pre)determined by universal principles (Chomsky l982; l995 and subsequent work). The interaction between insights of formal theories of grammar and empirical data becomes possible only by means of rigorous monitoring of the corpora under analysis, given that variation and change can only be measured in terms of statistical patterns of language use. The ongoing project at the University of Minho, The Sociolinguistic Profile of Braga´s Speech Variety, seeks to pursue these goals. 

As part of this project, the University of Minho is hosting the Ist International Symposium on Variation in Portuguese. The meeting aims to bring together researchers working on variable phenomena internal to the different varieties of Portuguese – European, Brazilian and African varieties of Portuguese – at different levels of the grammar (phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics).

2nd Call for Papers:

Submissions should be anonymous and not reveal the identity of the author(s) in any form (e.g., references, file name of the abstract). Abstracts should not exceed two pages in length (including examples and references), 12-point type, Times font, single line spacing, 2.5 cm margins. The abstract may be written either in Portuguese or English.
