Abstract:

Originally published in 1915, this book presents a detailed guide to the Hackness dialect then 'spoken by agriculturalists and their labourers on the Wolds and in the Dales of North-Eastern and Eastern Yorkshire'. The text is divided into two main parts, with the first analysing phonetic elements of the dialect and the second examining its grammatical structure and examples of usage. A bibliography and comprehensive glossary are also included. This book will be of value to anyone with an interest in local dialects and linguistics.

Preface; Bibliography; Abbreviations; Phonetic symbols; Introduction; Part I: 1. The phonology of the modern dialect; 2. The phonology of the dialect in Middle English; 3. The development of the M.E. vowels in stressed syllables - the English element; 4. The development of the M.E. vowels in stressed syllables - the Scandinavian element; 5. The development of the M.E. vowels in stressed syllables - the French element; 6. The vowels in unstressed syllables; 7. The consonants; 8. The historic originals of the present vowel-system; Appendix. Tabular statement of the vowel development; Part II: 1. A grammar of the dialect; 2. Specimens of the dialect; Word-list; Index.
