Meeting Description:

The Olomouc Linguistics Colloquium (Olinco) is a general linguistics conference held at least biannually at Palacký University Olomouc. It covers synchronic or diachronic aspects of grammar, phonology, or semantics. Papers can treat language description, language acquisition, performance, translation, or language deficits.

Olinco 2014 will be held on 5 - 7 June 2014 (Thursday - Saturday) in Olomouc, Czech Republic in the recently restored Art Centre of Palacký University.

Final Call for Papers:

Olinco 2014 will be held on 5 - 7 June 2014 (Thursday - Saturday) in Olomouc, Czech Republic in the recently restored Art Centre of Palacký University. The topic of the conference will again be language use and linguistic structure. We look forward to contributions which include and justify proposals for linguistic structure, and at the same time relate these structures to some aspect of language use, such as information structure, phonetics, or meaning.

This year the conference will also include four specialized workshops:

Speech Acquisition (Thursday, June 5):

This workshop will focus on acquisition of L1 and L2 phonetics and phonology by children and adults. We welcome contributions on topics such as monolingual and bilingual acquisition of segments and prosody, typical and atypical development of L1 and L2 speech production and perception, implications of acquisitional data for phonological theory, models of phonological development.

Semantics of Referring Expressions (Thursday, June 5):

The workshop aims to bring together linguists interested in the semantics and pragmatics of natural language, focusing on interpretative issues related to nominal complexes. The theme should not exclude papers on other subjects, but submissions traditionally related to this theme (indefinite/definite NPs, plurality/kind/mass denoting NPs and referential pronouns) are especially welcome.

Language Families and Dialects: Redrawing the Boundaries (Saturday, June 7):

The workshop welcomes submissions that give evidence that various dialects or even languages can be better analyzed in ways that significantly modify traditional classifications. The invited speakers will argue that Moroccan Arabic is a relexified dialect descended from medieval Spanish (Romance), and that Modern English descends from a dialect of Norse (North Germanic) spoken in the East Midlands. The hypothesized reclassifications can range from far-reaching to those of limited scope.

Corpora of Spoken Language: Processing and Linguistic Analysis:

The workshop aims to stimulate a discussion between those who create corpora of spoken language and those who use them for linguistic analyses of grammar and lexis. We welcome contributions on topics related to the creation and annotation of corpora of spoken language, as well corpus-based analyses of spoken language data.

Papers and Posters:

Proposals are invited for oral presentations and posters in the form of abstracts related to the general topic and/or a workshop topic. Poster sessions will be an integral part of the conference program. The language of the conference will be English.
