Description:

We are seeking 1~2 highly motivated postdoctoral research associate to join Prof. Hong Yu's Biomedical Natural Language Processing (BioNLP) group at UMass Medical School and UMass Amherst. This position will primarily be located at the UMass Medical School in Worcester, MA. The
BioNLP group is actively pursuing projects in figure search and summarization, question answering in the biomedical domain, and adverse drug event detection.


Responsibilities:
The successful candidates will help investigate new algorithms to support our current research thrusts. This will require extensive experience with data mining (DM) and implementing machine learning (ML) systems. A plus will be background in computer vision, especially with OCR or figure search and analysis.

Qualifications:
Candidates for this position should have a PhD in Computer Science or related field and a significant technical track record including publications in top conferences and journals in:
- Machine Learning,
- Data Mining, and/or
- Computer Vision/Pattern Recognition

Proficiency in quantitative analytical methods and strong programming skills (e.g., python, matlab, java, C/C++, weka, etc.), along with extensive research experience in hands-on machine learning (ML) and data mining (DM), is essential. Additional experience in bioinformatics or figure search and analysis is desirable.

Successful applicants will join a vibrant collaborative research environment, will work closely with clinical investigators and senior personnel in the lab, and should have the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team. The position will be for one year, renewable for a second year, starting Summer or Fall 2014.

Professor Hong Yu's group in the division of Health Informatics and Implementation Science in the Department of Quantitative Health Sciences (http://www.umassmed.edu/Content.aspx?id=146084&linkidentifier=id&itemid=146084) has multiple postdoctoral positions for natural language processing (NLP), machine learning and data mining, with a focus on clinical and biomedical applications. Professor Yu holds faculty positions at University of Massachusetts Department of Quantitative Health Sciences and Department of Computer Science the Center for Intelligent Information Retrieval (CIIR,http://ciir.cs.umass.edu/), and VA Central Western Massachusetts (http://www.centralwesternmass.va.gov/), and she has led the development of multiple information retrieval and question answering systems including AskHERMES (http://www.askhermes.org), figure search (http://figuresearch.askhermes.org), annotation (http://www.biodiscourserelation.org/) and adverse drug event detection system (http://www.aderepository.org).
