It is organized by Leiden University, the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen and Radboud University Nijmegen in the week before the seventh International Speech Prosody Conference, which is to be held in Dublin (Ireland), 21-26 May 2014.

The symposium continues the tradition of the previous three, Beijing 2004, La Rochelle (France) 2006 and Nanjing 2012, in aiming to present state-of-the-art research on the typological, phonetic, phonological, psycholinguistic, acquisitional and technological aspects of tonal contrasts. This plenary symposium will have five sections, to be held on 14, 15 and 16 May, each of which is introduced by a keynote speaker. In the afternoon of 13 May, there will be an advanced speech analysis tutorial conducted by Paul Boersma.

Section 1. The analysis and typology of lexical tone. Keynote speaker Larry Hyman (Department of Linguistics, UC Berkeley).
Section 2. Pitch, voice quality, vowel quality and duration in suprasegmental contrasts. Keynote speaker Christian DiCanio (Haskins Laboratories, Yale University).
Section 3. Tone in perception and production. Keynote speaker Patrick Wong (School of Communication, North Western University, Evanston IL).
Section 4. L1 and L2 acquisition of tone. Keynote speaker Karen Mattock (University of Western Sydney)
Section 5. The phonetics and phonology of word prominence. Keynote speaker Vincent van Heuven (Leiden University Centre for Linguistics).
