What Does it Mean to be a 'Traditional' Destination? 
Challenges and Opportunities for Education Abroad in Europe

The Forum on Education Abroad's second European conference focuses on the education abroad destination that has been and continues to be the most popular for U.S. students: Europe.
 
Europe's position as a leading destination for U.S. education abroad students remains strong. In recent years, however, the field of education abroad has been witness to the emerging trend of education abroad in 'exotic' or 'non-traditional' destinations. While Europe may seem a traditional and familiar destination, it offers diversity of cultures, communities, and program models.
 
This conference seeks to understand the challenges and opportunities for education abroad in the European context. What connotations are evoked by Europe's status as a traditional destination? How has education abroad in Europe evolved over the years, and how will it continue to evolve in the future? How can we prepare students for the realities of the contemporary 'European experience?'
 
The conference will address the interests of education abroad administrators and faculty who work and teach in Europe, as well as colleagues from the U.S. who work with European programs and universities. The common goal of the conference will be to share ideas for model practices for U.S. education abroad in Europe, including program design and curriculum, teaching, and a wide range of administrative issues and topics. Conference sessions will maintain the distinctive format of the Forum's annual conference by promoting collegial dialogue and the lively exchange of ideas through attendee participation. Preference will be given to sessions that offer several perspectives on a topic, rather than a single personal or institutional view. The European conference is intentionally smaller in scale and shorter in duration than the Forum's annual conference. The dynamic campus of the 2014 host institution, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, will provide a fitting venue to address the topic of education abroad in Europe.

Call for Papers:

The Forum encourages session proposals from international education and faculty colleagues with experience in and knowledge of U.S. education abroad in Europe. 

Topics of Interest:
 
- Understanding the diversity of European education abroad programs and the many models of delivery present in the European context
- Deconstructing European education abroad: How might a reexamination of this traditional destination reinvigorate the old continent?
- Curricular innovation in a traditional destination
- Student integration in the European context: How may we best address the student's integration into the host university, country, and continent? What are the realities, challenges, and opportunities of student integration in Europe?
- The historical tradition of the European university
- European history and contemporary European politics: how can U.S. students best be engaged in the relevance of these topics to the globalized world?
- Questioning the globalization of European education abroad: Is study in Europe still a ''Western experience,'' or has it become a global experience? What are the challenges and opportunities associated with globalizing the European experience?
- How might education abroad in Europe serve as a foundation for subsequent study in more non-traditional destinations?
- The city experience vs. the provincial experience: How is each of these very different experiences distinctively ''European''?
- What does the trend of short-term study abroad mean for the traditional education abroad experience?
- Outcomes assessment in the European context: how do we establish and assess learning outcomes to ensure that real learning is taking place?
- The challenges and opportunities of offering university courses in English when the language of instruction at the university is not English
- How should we address the challenges related to financing education abroad in Europe
- Staying safe in a ''safe'' destination: safety and security in the European context.
- Program administration in popular destinations: managing sites with hundreds of study abroad students
