Meeting Description:

Mapping Methods: Approaches to Language Studies (MaMe2014)

The University of Tartu, the Institute of the Estonian Language, and Tallinn University are pleased to host a conference on methods in linguistic research ‒ Mapping Methods: Approaches to Language Studies (MaMe2014) ‒ from 8-10 May 2014 in Tartu, Estonia.

The multitude of linguistic methods in use today raises the concern and need for interdisciplinary communication and collaboration, instead of the traditional relative isolation and autonomy of methodology. It is the aim of this conference to provide a platform for dialogue, where the disciplinary relations between multiple approaches could be evaluated and the possibilities for transfer or integration of methods assessed and discussed.

Plenary Speakers:

Daniel Cohnitz (University of Tartu, Estonia)
Michael Dunn (Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics, The Netherlands)
Terttu Nevalainen (University of Helsinki, Finland)
Guillaume Thierry (Bangor University, United Kingdom)

All speakers have confirmed their participation.

2nd Call for Papers:

Mapping Methods: Approaches to Language Studies (MaMe2014)
Deadline Extended

We encourage method-oriented contributions from a wide range of disciplines, including:

- Historical linguistics
- Language typology
- Sociolinguistics
- Phylogenetic studies
- Computational modelling
- Corpus linguistics
- Language contacts
- Psycholinguistics
- Neurolinguistics
- Language acquisition

This list is not conclusive, and any contributions that make an effort to productively contribute to the topics under discussion are very welcome.

We invite researchers to present the results of their studies while putting greater emphasis than usual on the methodological aspects and elaborating on the interrelations between the method and the object of study, guiding assumptions in the theoretical frameworks, and the possibilities for mixing methods and interdisciplinary collaboration.

More information can be found at the conference webpage http://mappingmethods.eki.ee.
