Description:

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship supported by the National Science Foundation grant “INSPIRE: Gradient Symbolic Computation.” This group project is devoted to developing a novel type of computing that fuses neural network and symbolic computation. In this framework, discrete structures are built of symbols that have continuous activation values.
 
The postdoctoral fellow will help develop this framework, working on projects related to sentence processing (in both perception and production) that integrate empirical studies of human language processing with computational modeling. The fellow will be based in Northwestern University’s Department of Linguistics, supervised by Matt Goldrick, and will work closely with co-investigators from the Cognitive Science and Computer Science Departments at Johns Hopkins University (including Paul Smolensky, Akira Omaki, Geraldine Legendre, and a to-be-appointed computational postdoc).
 
The project is funded by NSF’s new INSPIRE program, created to support unusually forward-looking, high-risk/high-return research. The position offers the appointee the opportunity to be a key player in the exciting intellectual environment of a highly interdisciplinary research team of leading faculty members collaborating intensively to break new ground at the foundations of computation and cognition. These faculty members are committed to contributing to the career development of the appointee, who will also have opportunities to pursue their own research projects.
 
The initial appointment is for one year, with an expectation of a second year, conditioned on satisfactory progress. Applications are open to both citizens and non-citizens of the US.
