Description:

We are pleased to announce that the Corpus of Historical Low German has been awarded an infrastructure grant from the Hercules foundations (http://www.herculesstichting.be/in_English/index.php) with which we will be able to build a parsed corpus of Middle Low German over the next three years. 

We are able to employ two collaborators in the rank of research assistant (although it should be emphasized that this is an infrastructure project, not a research project). Their task is the digitization, lemmatization and annotation (PoS tagging, syntactic parsing) of the texts, partially using and where necessary adapting existing software.

The corpus will be delivered in two formats, (i) XML and (ii) in the format of the Penn Parsed Corpora of Historical English, in order to ensure the compatibility with other historical corpora using this format and being widely used in the diachronic syntax research community (e.g. IcePaHC, INPOLDER, Tycho Brahe Corpus, PCHF).

The positions:
- Temporary contract for three years, beginning May 2014 or soon thereafter
- Place of work: Ghent (Belgium)
- Status of ‚Wetenschappelijk Medewerker‘, salarisschaal 1

Profile of the positions:
Qualification: Master
Assistant 1: Familiarity with Middle Low German or other older West Germanic language (e.g. Early New High German, Middle Dutch). Experience with corpora and programming skills will be an advantage, but not essential upon entry.

Assistant 2: Familiarity with the construction of corpora (synchronic or historical), programming skills, XML. Familiarity with Middle Low German or other older West Germanic language (e.g. Early New High German, Middle Dutch) will be an advantage, but not essential upon entry.

NB: As stated above, this is an infrastructure grant. The advertised positions are therefore not suitable for candidates wishing to pursue a PhD, although we will encourage engagement in research based on the corpus, and support any ambitions to continue with a PhD research after the end of the project. Therefore, the positions are most suitable for recent graduates who have not decided yet whether they would like to do a PhD or not, allowing them to gain relevant experience in a research context along with important practical skills.
