Job Title: Associate Senior Lecturer in Latin
Job Rank: Senior Lecturer
Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Ling & Literature
Required Language(s): English (eng)
Specific subject description
The University of Gothenburg offers both Bachelor’s and Master’s programmes with Latin as main field of study. Education is offered at first-, second- and third-cycle level. The subject is also involved in the Teacher Education Programme and cooperates closely with the other classical languages at the Department (in addition to Classical Greek, Old Church Slavonic also belongs in this category). The current research concerns history of mentality, literature, epigraphy, language history, and oral and written language. The researchers within the subject are involved in the research profile Transculturality, Translation and Transmission. The subject also cooperates across departmental boundaries, for example with Classical Archaeology and Ancient History and the Medieval Studies Committee.
The position, which is a qualifying appointment, consists of both research (75%) and teaching and some administrative work (25%). In addition to independent research activities, the successful applicant will be expected to initiate new research projects in cooperation with researchers involved in the Department’s interdisciplinary research profiles. The applicants must therefore indicate on their application how their own research can benefit further development of the established profiles at the Department. The successful applicant will be expected to actively seek research funding during the latter part of the appointment. The teaching assignments will consist of lectures, seminars and examinations, as well as supervision of students. The position may also include pedagogical development and cooperation within the Department’s interdisciplinary programmes (the first-cycle programme in International Languages and the planned second-cycle programme in World Literature).
Qualified for appointment as Associate Senior Lecturer is a person who has been awarded a PhD (or has equivalent academic qualifications) no more than seven years prior to the application deadline within a subject area relevant to the position in question. If there are special grounds, priority will also be given to applicants with degrees obtained more than seven years prior to the application deadline.
Regulations for the evaluation of qualifications for academic positions are given in Chapter 4, Section 3 - 4 of the Higher Education Ordinance.
In the assessment of qualifications, equal attention will be given to pedagogical and scholarly competence as well as other relevant qualifications. In the selection process, special attention will be given to documented qualifications within the following areas:
- Scholarly competence in the subject area in question, demonstrated through research and development work, and through scholarly publications;
- Pedagogical competence in the subject area in question, demonstrated through experience of planning and implementation of education, including supervision and examination;
- Participation in the national and international research community.
The applicant’s ability to interact and cooperate with the surrounding community will also be considered.
