Meeting Description:

With the rapid spread of globalization, multilingual and multicultural encounters have become the norm in a growing number of academic and professional settings. As communities of practice become ever more international and de-localized, the role, function and status of languages for special purposes in professional, institutional, scientific and academic communication become ever more closely intertwined with attendant issues of meaning negotiation in L1/L2 and/or lingua franca encounters, but also with aspects of LSP teaching and LSP translation.

In the light of the above, this conference intends to explore LSP research at all levels of specialization and in all its forms - professional, institutional, scientific and technical - with special regard to its pedagogical and translational implications. Investigations of textual, semantic and pragmatic aspects of LSP teaching and translation are especially welcome, as are methodological approaches drawing on genre analysis, contrastive linguistics and corpus linguistics.

The key-issues of the conference include (but are by no means limited to) the following:

1. LSP Teaching & Pedagogy

- LSP research and language teaching in the university, and in professional and corporate settings
- English-medium instruction in the university
- Choice of varieties (e.g. ELF) to be taught as a second or foreign language in specialised domains
- CLIL 
- Traditional and new media in LSP teaching
- Corpus linguistics and LSP teaching

2. LSP and translation (contrastive, interlinguistic and intercultural perspectives)

- LSP research, translation and language teaching
- Translation practices in institutional, technical, scientific and academic settings
- Translation and intercultural mediation in public diplomacy and in transnational corporate communication
- Translation and rewriting in popularizing communication
- Translation and localization in the new media

Isabel García Izquierdo (Universitat Jaume I de Castelló, Spain)

Submissions:

Submissions should be directed to the following e-mail address: clavier14.workshop at unimi.it by 20 August 2014.

The required format for submissions is an abstract of 300 words (including references), possibly in ms/word format, outlining the main thrust and conclusions of the paper. Please do not include any self-identifying information on the abstract; indicate only the title and the abstract itself. On a separate cover sheet, please specify:

Proceedings:

A volume of proceedings and one of selected papers will be published. All papers accepted will be included in one of these volumes.

Finalized versions of papers submitted for publication in the proceedings should be emailed to clavier14.workshop at unimi.it by 15 April 2015 at the latest. The upper limit is 7,000 words (10,000 for plenary papers), including references, footnotes, tables, etc.
