Description:

The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), the National Federation of Modern Language Teachers’ Associations (NFMLTA), and the Modern Language Journal (MLJ) are pleased to announce a call for applications for the ACTFL / NFMLTA / MLJ Dissertation Support Grants. 

The purpose of these grants is to support graduate students in the fields of Applied Linguistics and Language Education at the dissertation writing stage. These grants can provide resources to graduate students at any stage of dissertation writing, e.g., data gathering, familiarization with relevant research, data analysis, or write-up of the findings. The award amount is $2,500; up to two grants per year may be awarded.

Requirements:
- Applicants must be enrolled in a doctoral program at an institution of higher education in the U.S.; they need not be citizens or permanent residents.
- Applicants must have completed by the application deadline all requirements for the Ph.D. / Ed.D. except the dissertation.
Applicants must have an approved dissertation proposal with, if applicable, an approved IRB.

How to apply:
Submit a complete application. The complete application includes:
- Applicant contact information: name; physical address; e-mail address; name of applicant’s institution of higher education.
- Brief statement signed by the dissertation advisor/dissertation committee chair stating that the applicant has: successfully defended his/her dissertation proposal; the IRB process has been cleared (if appropriate to the study); the applicant has successfully completed all but the dissertation writing at the time of application for this grant.
- Proposed dissertation title and a description of the proposed research. The description should  include: purpose of the study; theoretical framework(s); research questions; methodology; importance of the study; limitations. (maximum two pages, font: Times New Roman 12)

Complete applications must be submitted on the ACTFL website Homepage, www.actfl.org by September 30, 2014. Look for the announcement for the Dissertation Support Grants on the ACTFL Homepage, scroll to the bottom of the announcement, and submit where it says “here.” 

Awardees will receive a check in the amount of $ 2,500. An announcement of the recipients will occur at the time of the ACTFL 2014 Convention as well as via electronic and print media.
