Call Deadline: 15-Oct-2014

Meeting Description:

The UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, and the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights receiving it, confirm access to information and education as basic human rights. However, still over 50 million of deaf and hard-of-hearing Europeans are deprived of basic human rights simply because they cannot hear TV programs, cinema films, theatre plays or web broadcasts.

In order to cope with this problem, the purpose of the panel is to gather scholars, professionals, and experts around the main theme of subtitling for the deaf and the hard-of-hearing (SDH). In particular, the foci of the IPrA panel, to be addressed from the point of view of the producer (broadcasters, access services, subtitlers…); of the target audience (deaf, hard-of-hearing, foreign people); and of the researcher, will be on Multimodality:

- How are subtitles structured within the audiovisual context they are added to?
- What is the contribution of SDH to the global meaning of the audiovisual product?
- Which technical features are used to ensure global understanding?
- How reformulation compensates with the loss of oral features?

and on Accessibility:

- How do subtitles function for their audience?
- How readable are SDH within the framework of the audiovisual product they are part of?
- How differently foreign and deaf or Hard-of-Hearing people react to the same SDH?
- How is technology and automatic subtitling helping accessibility?
- How can subtitles be re-used for educational purposes?
