The Semantics, Pragmatics, and Metapragmatics of Discourse Connectives, Markers, and Particles in Variable Contexts

14th International Pragmatics Conference, Antwerp, Belgium, 26-31 July 2015

The past two decades have seen an explosion of research on the use of linguistic expressions, referred to using various terms, including discourse 'marker', 'connective', and 'particle' (Jucker and Ziv 1998:1). Moreover, Fischer (2006:1) observes that '…the approaches vary with respect to very many different aspects: …the terminology used, the functions considered, the problems focused on, and the methodologies employed.'

This panel aims to bring together scholars who examine the use of these 'pragmatic markers' (cf. Aijmer 2013), taking into account how variation in their use can be explained by factors such as (but not limited to) text type, activity type, discourse context, speakers (e.g. their social and cultural background, assumptions, dialect, language, language proficiency), and their discourse-pragmatic functions. Adopting Aijmer's focus, our objective 'is to go beyond a concern with sociolinguistic categories such as age and gender' (2013:2), in order to account for variation in the use of these linguistic expressions in different discourse contexts. A more general goal of this panel is to gain a better understanding of the 'multifunctionality' of pragmatic markers (i.e. discourse markers, connectives, or particles) and to provide an empirically based account of their meanings on the semantic and pragmatic levels. Papers submitted for this panel may adopt different theoretical frameworks of analysis (e.g. Gricean or neo-Gricean, Relevance Theory, Discourse Analysis, Argumentation Theory, etc.).

Please Note: 

a) All abstracts, even if accepted by the panel organizer, will have to be submitted individually via web-based submission to IPrA (http://ipra.ua.ac.be/) by 15 October 2014. 
b) IPrA membership is required both for the web-based submission and, later on, for presentation at the 14th International Pragmatics Conference. 
c) Abstracts should be based on research that is clearly in progress (if not yet completed), with a well-formulated research question, and a good description of the types of data used (if the work is empirical) and of the approach.
