Meeting Description:

The University of Vaasa Research Group for Translation, LSP and Multilingualism (VAKKI) arranges a Symposium on February 12-13, 2015 under the theme of Borders under Negotiation.

Keynote Speakers:

- Professor Jaakko Husa (Faculty of Law, University of Lapland) 
- Professor Helge Jordheim (Department of Culture Studies and Oriental Languages, University of Oslo) 
- Professor Michael North (Department of History, University of Greifswald)

The working languages of the symposium are Finnish, Swedish, English and German.

Call for Papers:

We would like to welcome proposals for presentations and workshops which discuss the theme from different points of view, for example:

- The concept of border and its function
- Visible and invisible borders
- The construction, movement and breaking of borders
- The ethical dimensions of borders
- Research and boundaries: multi-, cross- and interdisciplinarity
- The boundaries of objectivity
- The boundaries of knowledge, understanding and expertise
- Drawing methodological boundaries
- The boundaries of linguistic variation
- Identity
- Borders and boundaries in time
- Spaces, borders and boundaries
- Multilingualism and multilingual communication
- Translating, translation and translator
- Interpreting, interpretation and interpreter
- The boundaries of genres and narration
- The boundaries of texts and their interpretation
- Multimodality
- Mediation and adaptation
- Transnationalism and hybridity

In addition to these, all proposals relating to VAKKI’s research fields are welcome.

Participants may contribute with a presentation (20 min + 5 min discussion) or a poster (the minimum size is A1, ca. 60 cm x 84 cm). The symposium also features workshops. The presentations will be compiled into a double blind refereed symposium volume which will be published in printed and electronic open access form.
