Meeting Description:

The Language and Society Conference is the Linguistic Society of New Zealand's biennial forum for presenting linguistic research that focuses on social and cultural dimensions of language. It will be held   at the University of Waikato, Hamilton 23-25 November 2014. 

The conference website (http://www.waikato.ac.nz/fass/conference/langsoc/) is under development at present. Information on registration and fees for the conference will follow.

Call for Papers:

Abstracts (maximum 200 words) are invited for peer review for the New Zealand Linguistics Society's Biennial Language and Society Conference.

Papers will be 20 minutes with 10 minutes for discussion and should report on research in the areas of social and anthropological linguistics, relating to (but not limited to) any of the following themes:

- Language variation
- Language and social factors
- Language and culture
- Language contact phenomena
- Language maintenance and shift
- Language rights, policy and planning
- Language and education
- Languages of Aotearoa/New Zealand (Māori, NZE, NZSL, languages of diaspora)

While the main focus of the conference is sociolinguistics, there will also be a stream for general linguistics. In keeping with the conference focus, researchers submitting abstracts in this area are encouraged to consider human dimensions relevant to their research.

Presentations from postgraduate students are welcome. 

There are two methods for abstract submission:

1. You can sign up with EasyChair for a free account: https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=langsoc2014, and follow the submission process online. If you use this method, please note that authors need to specify (tick the box) a corresponding author even for single authored papers. Also, authors need to list at least 3 keywords for their paper, separated by pressing enter.

2. You can submit your abstract through the conference email address: langsoc at waikato.ac.nz, preferably in a .docx file.

Acceptance of abstracts will be notified on a rolling basis. Please indicate if you need a fast turn-around for funding purposes.
