Description:

Department of World Cultures, University of Helsinki invites applications for a doctoral student position
in the project "Stability and Change in Language Contact: The Case of Southern Ndebele (South Africa)," led by Professor Axel Fleisch and funded by the Academy of Finland. 
The length of the term of the position is 48 months, beginning on 1 September 2014.

Duties and Responsibilities: 
The doctoral student will be expected to work on his or her own doctoral thesis and complete his or her postgraduate studies, in collaboration with a research team working on South African isiNdebele. This will involve several fieldwork stays for data collection. The thesis relates to the Phonology/Prosody of Southern Ndebele and will be supervised by Dr. Lotta Aunio. The duties also include modest teaching and other research-related tasks.

Requirements:
The successful applicant must posses:
- an MA degree in African Linguistics or a closely related discipline (e.g. Linguistic Anthropology, General Linguistics); 
- experience in the following areas (will be considered an advantage): Bantu language studies, Phonology (in particular Tonology/Prosody), and Contact Linguistics;
- excellent research collaboration;
- very good oral and written English;
- organizational skills;
- ability and motivation, as demonstrated in previous degree studies or otherwise, to pursue postgraduate studies and a doctoral degree.

The University of Helsinki offers a salary dependent on qualifications and work experience. At the beginning of the employment period doctoral student’s salary is €2,022 gross per month, for full-time employment. The appointment starts with a probationary period of four months.
