Summer School on Argumentation: Computational and Linguistic Perspectives

Host Institution: University of Dundee
Coordinating Institution: University of Dundee
Website: http://ssa2014.arg.dundee.ac.uk/

Dates: 04-Sep-2014 - 08-Sep-2014
Location: Dundee, United Kingdom

Focus: The summer school aims to provide attendees with a solid foundation in computational and linguistic aspects of argumentation and the emerging connections between the two. Furthermore, attendees will gain experience in using various tools for argument analysis and processing.

The school is being held in the days before the COMMA 2014 conference (Fifth International Conference on Computational Models of Argument) in Pitlochry:
http://comma2014.arg.dundee.ac.uk

Minimum Education Level: BA

Description:
The summer school will include tutorials from COMMA 2014 invited speakers, as well as other leading academics in computational approaches to argumentation and linguistics.

Moreover, students may submit a 500-700 word position statement on your research interest to be presented at the student session organized during the first day of the school. The student session provides an opportunity for
attendees to present their research to their fellow students and a selection of the tutors. If you wish to make a presentation, please submit a 500-700 word position statement on your research using the IOS Press format. Your
position statement will be reviewed, but this will be for feedback purposes only - anyone submitting will be allowed to present. A prize of 100 GBP, sponsored by the Journal of Argument and Computation
(http://www.tandfonline.com/loi/tarc20), will be awarded to the best presenter.

Submissions are via EasyChair:
https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=ssa20140.

The event is hosted by the Centre for Argument Technology
http://arg-tech.org/, and is supported by the University of Dundee, the
Scottish Informatics and Computer Science Alliance (SICSA)
http://www.sicsa.ac.uk, and the Society for the Study of Artificial
Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour (AISB) http://www.aisb.org.uk.

Financial Aid: Applications accepted until 13-Jul-2014
The Society for the Study of Artificial Intelligence and Simulation of Behaviour (AISB) have kindly agreed to allocate one student travel award to the summer school, to cover the travel costs up to 300 GBP for a student at a UK university. The AISB award is open to members and non-members of the society, with the successful applicant also receiving free one-year membership. A condition of the award is that the successful applicant write a report on the summer school for publication in the AISB Quarterly newsletter.

A limited number of grants are available from SICSA for students attending Scottish universities. These grants cover the cost of registration and, if necessary, accommodation. They do not cover travel, however since you will be attending a SICSA- sponsored event your institution's SICSA budget should cover travel.
