Description:

The Department of Language and Literature at Trondheim Norwegian University of Science and Technology is welcoming applications from PhD students to work on the project "Linguistic Complexity in the Individual and Society (LCIS)."

The goal of the project is to study linguistic complexity in three different areas: Formal Grammar, Language Acquisition, and Sociolinguistics. The groundbreaking part of LCIS is that it will attempt to combine different sub-disciplines of modern Linguistics. Different methodologies and theoretical perspectives will be useful in order to illuminate complementary aspects of language complexity, and thus, contribute to deepening our understanding of this phenomenon. A unifying aspect of the research will be the use of multilingual data. The data have become increasingly important for linguistic methodologies and theories, but also for public policy makers in the sense that they address consequences of migration and children growing up acquiring multiple languages.

Duties and Responsibilities:
The successful applicants must participate in and complete the PhD-programme in Language and Linguistics within the period of the appointment. More information can be found on website: http://www.ntnu.no/hf/forskerutdanning

Requirements:
Candidates are invited to submit a 5-page project proposal within one or more of the three areas listed above. The proposal should focus on linguistic complexity. Candidates who are able to integrate more than one area in their project will be given preference. Interested applicants are invited to contact Professor Terje Lohndal (see below) to obtain a copy of the project proposal for LCIS.
The project proposal should contain the following:
- an outline of the idea that the candidate wants to pursue;
- brief descriptions of the relevant theoretical background and methodological aspects of the proposed project;
- a clear statement of how the project will contribute to addressing the research objectives stated in the full LCIS project description;
- a potential main supervisor (one of the six senior researchers involved in LCIS: Professors Tor A. Åfarli, Kristin Melum Eide, Terje Lohndal, Brit Mæhlum, Mila Vulchanova, or Chris Wilder).

How to apply:
The application is to be handed in electronically through website http://www.jobbnorge.no marked with HF-14-014, with attachments preferably gathered in one document. The following attachments must be sent:
- a 5 page project proposal;
- scanned copies of certificates (certified copies must be supplied later);
- list of publications.
If some of the attachments cannot be sent electronically, one copy should be sent by regular mail. The envelope must be marked with the reference number HF-14-014 and sent to:
NTNU, Faculty of Humanities, NO-7491 Trondheim, Norway.

The positions are remunerated according to salary level 50 in the national salary scheme, gross NOK 420 800,- annually (2014), of which 2 % is deducted for the State Pension scheme.
Further details about the positions can be obtained by contacting the chair of LCIS, Professor Terje Lohndal at terje.lohndal at ntnu.no

Applicants who are considered for the positions will be asked for references and invited for an interview. The appointments will be made in accordance with the current regulations for fellowship appointments at universities. A contract will be drawn up detailing the period of appointment and required duties. The appointment is to be made in accordance with the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants. Primary residency at the Department of Language and Literature at the Faculty of Humanities in Trondheim is a prerequisite.

It is a major political objective to achieve a balance of age and gender in the national labour force and to recruit persons with an immigrant background. Immigrants and women are therefore encouraged to apply for the positions.

Application Deadline: 29-Aug-2014
