Description:

This full-time (1.0 FTE) position in the Department of Languages, Literature and Communication will be directly associated with the Language Teaching master programmes in the Utrecht Graduate School of Teaching. It will also figure prominently in the Netherlands network for enhancing research and teaching in the master programmes for teacher education in the Humanities.

We especially invite candidates with scientific expertise in research and teaching of foreign languages in secondary and tertiary education. The focus will be on secondary education, and foreign languages are here understood to be English, French, German or Spanish. Specialisation is open. We seek candidates who can strengthen forms of collaboration between research and teaching of languages in the Faculty of Humanities in direct contact with the neighbouring Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences.

The research profile will be developed within the programme of the Utrecht Institute of Linguistics OTS, and linked to the research concerns of 'Educational and Learning Sciences', one of Utrecht University’s research impulse areas.

Requirements

Research
- Extensive research experience in the broad domain of language studies, linguistics and foreign language education 
- PhD in a relevant field of expertise 
- Outstanding research achievements demonstrated by an excellent publication record 
- High visibility, strong international reputation 
- A prominent network of international cooperative relationships 
- Proven ability to obtain external funding (national or EU funds).

Teaching
- Extensive experience and enthusiasm for teaching and student supervision 
- Excellent teaching skills 
- Experience and leadership in curriculum development at undergraduate and graduate (MA, PhD) levels 
- Proven success in supervising PhD students 
- Knowledge of the fields where graduates of the educational programs work, specifically secondary schools.

Academic leadership
- Proven interpersonal, social and communicative skills 
- Proven organisational and management skills 
- Active role in leading (national and international) activities in the area of foreign language education and participation in scientific communities 
- Clear and proven interest in societal issues relating to foreign language education and ambition to engage in societal debates based on scientific expertise. 

The successful applicant is expected to reach fluency in Dutch within two years of taking up duty.  Depending on experience and formal qualifications to date, he/she may be required to enter a certification trajectory of nationally standardised tertiary teaching skills.

Offer
Full-time appointment for five years with tenure after positive evaluation. Employment conditions are based on the Collective Labour Agreement for the Dutch Universities. The gross salary depends on qualifications and experience and ranges in principle between € 5.003 and € 7.285 per month, commensurate with qualifications.
