Meeting Description:

The majority of languages spoken in Russia have a very short written tradition. So, there is no written evidence to confirm hypothetical diachronic processes. Nevertheless, changes in the system of a language can be detected in synchronic data. One and the same linguistic unit can reveal different stages of grammaticalization or lexicalization. Moreover, changes in a linguistic system can be observed due to the comparison of modern data and the data collected by early researchers. Finally, the comparison of related languages (dialects) that ‘split’ in the ‘near past’ can provide insights into language history.

Call for Papers:

We welcome presentations studying system changes in phonology, morphology, syntax and lexicon in languages of Russia. The research can be based both on contemporary language material collected in the field and on data from archival sources. Although the conference is not focused on contact phenomena, contributions related to system changes that occur due to language interaction are also welcome.

Please send your abstract to langrus.spb at gmail.com before May 1, 2014. Abstracts should not exceed 2 pages (or 1 000 words), including examples and references. Abstracts should be submitted as .doc/.rtf files. If you use any non-standard fonts, please, include them as well and attach your abstract in .pdf format. Please, indicate the following information in the body of the letter: author’s name, affiliation, contact email. Notification of acceptance/rejection will be sent before June 1, 2014. 

Presentations should be 20 minutes in length followed by a ten minute discussion. The official languages of the conference are English and Russian, abstracts can be written in either language. There is no participation fee. The Organizing Committee cannot provide financial support to participants.

After the conference, we plan to publish the proceedings.
