Pragmatic Values in Non-dialogic Texts: A Diachronic Perspective

Meeting Description: 

The seminar aims at discussing ways in which texts from various times, belonging to genres that are not explicitly dialogic or fictional, encoded pragmatic meanings to construct their readers as interlocutors, and to pursue their communicative goals.

Correspondence, early newspapers, instructional texts, religious and political prose, had different strategies to establish relationships with their addressees, and to perform their role as 'macro-speech acts'. These strategies changed over time in connection with changes in language, in society and in specific textual communities, and can be traced (synchronically or diachronically) through indicators such as personal pronouns, modal markers, pragmatic markers and others.
