Location: Dallas, Texas, USA

Focus: The two-week workshop is an intensive, hands on Language and Culture Documentation (LCD) workshop at the International Linguistics Center in Dallas, Texas, USA. Its purpose is to equip individuals who have ethno-linguistic fieldwork experience or a field methods course to plan, execute, and archive a documentary corpus according to current best practices. The focus is not merely learning about LCD, but it provides practice in doing it. The four lead workshop instructors are co-authors of A Language and Culture Documentation Manual (in progress), a draft of which will serve as a guide for the workshop. Invited guests will lecture on topics in rapid word collection, oral storying, world arts, and ethnobotany.
Minimum Education Level: BA

Special Qualifications:
A background in linguistics is helpful, but not mandatory. The workshop is not for credit, except through a participant's home institution as an independent study. English is the language of instruction.

- Basic Oral Language Documentation (BOLD) 
- Techniques for collecting oral stories 
- Written transcription in a corpus 
- Culture documentation defined, with examples 
- Ethnomusicology and arts 
- Ethnobotany 
- Research and funding for LCD 
- Writing a documentation prospectus 
- Audio recording fundamentals and practice 
- Video recording fundamentals and practice 
- Introductions to software: SayMore, Audacity 
- Archiving a documentary corpus 
- Professional growth plans for participants based on the workshop and
previous experience
