The 2015 Linguistic Institute will take place July 6-31, 2015 on the campus of the University of Chicago, with the theme ‘Linguistic Theory in a World of Big Data'. We believe this theme serves to highlight a growing interest within the field of linguistics to test theory with increasingly larger data sets, such as data from extensive linguistic fieldwork and documentation, data from crowd-sourcing over the web, and corpus data from archival recordings and/or written sources. We envision that this theme captures several areas of emerging disciplinary interests such as the breakdown of a longstanding fundamental distinction between the categorical, discrete nature of linguistic competence and usage-based gradient variation. With increased scholarly attention being directed toward the gradient characteristics of both linguistic knowledge and use and toward the probabilistic properties that language knowledge and use may exhibit, some of the necessary groundwork is in place for moving towards a unifying theoretical approach.

We are requesting initial, informal proposals for potential workshops to be hosted in conjunction with the Institute. These proposals are to be submitted by April 1, 2014. We are happy to host a meeting of a regular conference or of a one-time-only workshop, particularly workshops that are consistent with the Institute theme. As at previous Institutes, the general assumption is that funding for workshops is the responsibility of their organizers, and that workshops have no or minimal registration fees to allow them to be maximally accessible to Institute participants, who are primarily students.

Classes at the Institute will be offered Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, with Wednesdays being reserved for informal activities. This leaves the weekends free for workshops and conferences to be offered concurrently with the Institute. The specific available dates are listed below:
- July 5 (the weekend before the official start of the Institute)
- July 11-12
- July 18-19 
- July 25-26

Proposals should contain the following information:
- The title of the workshop.
- The name of the sponsoring organization (if applicable).
- The names, institutional affiliations, and e-mail addresses of the organizers.
- The proposed length of the workshop or conference (e.g. half-day, one full day, two full days).
- The format of the event (e.g. method of selecting speakers, length of talks and discussion, use of commentators, etc.).
- Any available information about the presenters.
- A brief, one paragraph description of the workshop (and how it relates to the Institute theme, if applicable).
- Expected number of participants.
- Any special facility needs.
- Anticipated sources of funding.

Dates: 
If your workshop needs to be on a specific weekend, please specify the dates. If not, indicate that any of the available weekends will be possible.

Please note that April 1, 2014 is not a formal deadline for workshop proposals. You may propose a workshop at a later date, but it may not be possible to accommodate proposals received after this date. Workshop proposals will not be subjected to outside evaluation; however, should we receive more proposals than we can accommodate, we will select among them according to the date submitted and fit with the overall Institute.
