Focus: The 9th Leiden Summer School in Languages and Linguistics will be held from 14 until 25 July 2014 at the Faculty of Humanities of Leiden University. The Summer School offers a number of courses on a wide range of subjects in the field of languages and linguistics. The Summer School of 2014 will offer nine different programmes, most of which consist of four courses. Please note that you can put together your own programme by selecting specific courses from several programmes. 

The programmes we offer are: Indo-European Programme I, Indo-European Programme II, Semitic Programme, Iranian Programme, Germanic Programme, Indological Programme, Caucasian Programme, Russian Programme and Descriptive Programme.

Minimum Education Level: BA

Description:
Teaching language. All courses are taught in English, which means that good knowledge of the English language is a basic requirement. The courses of the Russian Programme are (mainly) taught in Russian.

Lunch. Lunch is not included in the tuition fee. However, a warm lunch will be provided daily at the same location as the courses. Participanting in the joint lunch is possible for an additional € 65,- (for all 10 days of the Summer School, € 6,50 per day).

Extra-curricular activities. Apart from the classes, some extra-curricular activities will be planned during the Summer School, which are included in the tuition fee.

Opening reception. In the afternoon of Sunday, July 14th, an opening reception will be held. Attending the reception is not obligatory, but offers all participants an opportunity to get to know each other and their teachers in an informal setting.

Farewell dinner. After the last classes on Friday, July 26th, a joint dinner will end the Summer School in a festive way. At this occassion, all participants will receive their certificates.

Evening programme. In the evening, a few lectures will be held on different linguistic topics. The programme will appear online in due course.

Course(s) Offered:
Indo-European I
    The first Indo-European Programme (which presupposes no previous knowledge of Indo-European linguistics) will consist of four courses: Historical Grammar of Tocharian, The Hittite Language, Reading Tocharian Texts, and an Introduction to Proto-Indo-European Phonology and Morphology. The students may of course also choose a course from other programs (Germanic, Iranian or Caucasian).

Indo-European II
    The second Indo-European Programme will consist of four courses: The Homeric Kunstsprache, Indo-European Syntax, The Glottalic Theory, and Indo-European Mythology.

Semitic
    The Semitic Programme will consist of four courses: Ugaritic, Biblical Hebrew, Neo-Aramaic, and Historical Grammar of Arabic. For some of the students, the course "The Structure of Iraqw in a Cushitic and a typological perspective" from the Descriptive Linguistics programme may also be of interest.

Iranian
    The Iranian Programme will consist of four courses: Sogdian, Khotanese, Ossetic, and Old Persian.

Germanic
    The Germanic Programme will consist of three courses: Old High German, Old English, and Old Frisian.

Indological
    The Indological Programme will consist of four courses: Features of Vedic Poetry, The syntax of Vedic Prose, Readings in anonymous Śaiva Literature, and Royal Encomiums in the Raghuvamśa and in early mediaeval Sanskrit inscriptions.

Caucasian
    The Caucasian Programme will consist of four courses: Avar, Armenian, Ossetic, and Georgian.

Russian
    The Russian Programme will consist of three courses: Master Class Active Russian (slot 1 and 2 in week 1), Masterclass Techniques for Interpreters Dutch-Russian or English-Russian (slot 1 and 2 in week 2) and the Master Class Russian Literature: Just outsite the literary canon (slot 3 and 4 in week 1 and 2).

Descriptive
    The Descriptive Linguistics Programme will consist of four courses: The structure of Iraqw, Typology of Focus, Tone: Fieldwork and analysis, and Technology for Linguistic Fieldwork.

Fee includes tuition, study materials, extra-curricular activities, coffee and tea during breaks, welcome reception and farewell dinner.
