Meeting Description:

The University Seminar on Columbia School Linguistics and the Columbia School Linguistic Society 
invite participation in the 12th International Columbia School Conference on the Interaction of 
Linguistic Form and Meaning with Human Behavior, from February 14 - 16, 2015, at Columbia University.

The conference brings together scholars and graduate students doing work under the theoretical framework of the Columbia School of Linguistics with colleagues and students in allied linguistic disciplines that take, among others, functional, cognitive, constructional, semiotic, exemplar, and usage-based approaches. In Columbia School linguistics, grammatical hypotheses are sign-based, built around pairings of morphological or positional signals with stable meanings. Explanation stems from the arbitrary communicative factor (the sign inventory) and the functional human factor. The conference lasts two-and-a-half days and provides opportunities for presenters to offer not only the conventional 20-minute paper, but longer pieces when appropriate. The organizers see to it that each paper has ample time for in-depth questions and discussion. In addition, the schedule allows for plenty of time for supplemental informal interaction. The conference takes place on the campus of Columbia University in Manhattan, facilitating the extra-curricular enjoyment of New York's many attractions.

Call for Papers:

Papers are invited which propose language-specific analyses of natural discourse data within any framework in which languages are viewed as semiotic systems. Particularly encouraged are submissions that advance semantic hypotheses to account for the distribution of linguistic forms.

Abstracts should be sent as an email attachment to conference at csling.org following these guidelines: The subject of the email should be:  CS Abstract 2015.  In the body of the email, please include:  (1) Author name(s) and affiliation(s); (2) Title of the paper; (3) Email addresses and telephone numbers of all authors.  The abstract, containing only the title of the paper and the text of the abstract, should be sent as an attachment (PDF, RTF, or Word format).  The abstract should be no more than 300 words, although references and/or data may be added to that limit.  

Deadline for receipt of abstracts: Monday, November 3, 2014.

The language of the conference is English.  Papers delivered in other languages will also be considered.
