Description:

The School of English wishes to appoint a Senior Lecturer in Applied Linguistics.  Colleagues in the School of English are known for their international-quality research in English Language, Applied Linguistics, Literary Linguistics, English Literature, Theatre and Performance, and Creative Writing and much of this activity is passed onto students through our research-led approach to learning and teaching.  With over 50 members of academic staff, the School of English is able to offer outstanding teaching across a wide range of subject areas.  In recent years five members of staff have received Senate Awards for Teaching Excellence, and one of our staff has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship.

The post-holder will be expected to provide research leadership within both their area of specialism and the School of English as a whole.  You will develop module options in the field and will contribute to the Master of Arts (MA) in Applied Linguistics with TESOL and possibly the MA in Language and Linguistics.  This post offers the opportunity to join a top-ranking School of English and to direct the Programme in Applied Linguistics which has an international reputation and recruits excellent students from all over the world.  You will contribute significantly to teaching at Masters level, and be expected to undertake a suitable administrative role in addition to demonstrating outreach and public engagement activities.  You will also be involved in the recruitment and supervision of doctoral students.

You will have a PhD (or equivalent experience) in a relevant subject area (second language acquisition, language teaching methodology, language testing, English for specific purposes, corpus linguistics, second language writing). together with proven teaching ability, and be able to contribute to existing modules, as well as developing new modules in your research specialism.  The ability to contribute to Sheffield’s research profile is essential for this position.
