Description:

The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics wishes to appoint an outstanding scholar and teacher as a Lecturer in Phonology. In addition to a specialisation in phonology, knowledge of corpus methods and/or quantitative or computational linguistic methodology is desirable.

You will have a PhD in a relevant subject area and proven experience in teaching phonology to undergraduate students across a range of modules. You should also have a record of high quality publications appropriate to the stage of your career and outstanding plans for future research projects and grant capture. Knowledge of and skills in corpus methods and/or quantitative/computational methodology that could help shape the further development of the Diachronic Electronic Corpus of Tyneside English (DECTE, http://research.ncl.ac.uk/decte/) would be an advantage.

You will teach phonetics and phonology on introductory modules on language structure at Stage 1, contribute to the teaching of the second-year module on phonology and be given the opportunity to design and deliver your own specialist module at Stage 3. All lecturing staff are expected to participate in the School’s thriving postgraduate culture by teaching on MA programmes and supervising PhD students and you will teach on the MA module on phonetics/phonology and contribute to the MA module on research methods. Staff also share in the administrative tasks essential to the running of the School. You will, in addition, be expected to participate actively in the Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences (CRiLLS, http://www.ncl.ac.uk/linguistics/).

The successful candidate will be joining a well-established team of scholars working on linguistics and English language within the School. Particular strengths lie in the study of language structure, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, historical linguistics and language evolution. Funded research projects over the past few years have addressed topics across these areas, including the syntax of polarity marking (http://research.ncl.ac.uk/yesandno/), Tyneside English (http://research.ncl.ac.uk/decte/), varieties of Irish English (http://www.lel.ed.ac.uk/dialects/ni.html) and language acquisition by low-literate learners (http://simplycrackinggoodstories.org/).

The School currently has 52 members of academic staff and 1 research fellow, working across the fields of Literature, Language and Linguistics, and Creative Writing. We have over 750 undergraduate students studying on our degree programmes in English Literature, Language, and Linguistics, over 100 taught postgraduate students and over 120 postgraduate research students. 

70% of our research was deemed ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the last Research Assessment Exercise and our teaching was rated as ‘excellent’ in the last QAA audit. The Language and Linguistics Subject Group has research strengths across the various areas within the subject and this is reflected in the teaching that we offer. We also host the MA in Linguistics, to which the successful candidate will be invited to contribute teaching.
