Description:

The School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics wishes to appoint an outstanding scholar and teacher as a Lecturer in the history of the English language. You will have a PhD on a topic within any subfield of the history of the English language, proven experience in teaching the subject to undergraduate students and experience of teaching more widely in topics in English language and linguistics. You should also have a record of high quality publications appropriate to the stage of your career and outstanding plans for future research projects and grant capture.

You will be expected to deliver teaching in modules across the UG curriculum, primarily in the history of the English language (including a module in Old English) but also in introductory modules in English language and linguistics more widely. There will also be an opportunity for you to design and deliver your own stage 3 specialist module(s).

All lecturing staff participate in the School’s thriving postgraduate culture and you will contribute to the teaching of relevant MA modules. You will also be expected to share in the administrative tasks essential to the running of the School and to participate actively in the Centre for Research in Linguistics and Language Sciences (CRiLLS, http://www.ncl.ac.uk/linguistics/).

The successful candidate will be joining a well-established team of scholars working on English language and linguistics within the School. Particular strengths lie in the study of language structure, sociolinguistics, language acquisition, historical linguistics and language evolution. Funded research projects over the past few years have addressed topics across these areas, including the syntax of polarity marking (http://research.ncl.ac.uk/yesandno/), Tyneside English (http://research.ncl.ac.uk/decte/), varieties of Irish English (http://www.lel.ed.ac.uk/dialects/ni.html) and language acquisition by low-literate learners (http://simplycrackinggoodstories.org/).

The School currently has 52 members of academic staff and 1 research fellow, working across the fields of Literature, Language and Linguistics, and Creative Writing. We have over 750 undergraduate students studying on our degree programmes in English Literature, Language, and Linguistics, over 100 taught postgraduate students and over 120 postgraduate research students. 70% of our research was deemed ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the last Research Assessment Exercise and our teaching was rated as ‘excellent’ in the last QAA audit. 

The Language and Linguistics Subject Group has research strengths across the various areas within the subject and this is reflected in the teaching that we offer. We also host the MA in Linguistics, to which the successful candidate will be invited to contribute teaching.
