Signs and Representations
4-5-6 December 2014

By addressing the issue of signs and representations, this conference hopes to investigate the elusive and ambiguous relationship between perception and the world; calling to the mind the possibility of alternative worlds and the relativity of spatio-temporal levels. Therefore, it is necessary to remember that signs and representations are the sum total of the cognitive process but it is highlighted in the creative literary act (prose or poetry) or through the cultural imagination (individual or collective) or the practices and customs that are the result of the act of perceiving.

Call for Papers:

Suggested topics include but are not limited to:

1. Signs and Representations in Theoretical and Applied Linguistics:

- Semantic multiplicity in the concepts of sign and representation (linguistic/non-linguistic meta-linguistic signs, mental/phonetic/poetic/behavioural representations
- Perception and representations of the world (multiplicity of perceptive levels and issues of reference the relationship between concept/denotation, substance/referent, reason/imagination …
- Sign and representation construction processes (productive and interpretative mechanisms; coding/decoding...)
- Signs and representations in communicative contexts

2. Signs and Representations in Literature:

- Imagination and its representations in the literary text (metaphor, imagery, metonymy)
- Literary creation and the representation of the world or alternative worlds

3. Cultural Signs and Representations:

- Signs and representations in daily routines (clothes, jewellery, food) and seasonal occasions (celebrations and feasts)
- Signs and representations in social customs (religious and sectarian signs and representations, rites, myths and rituals)

4. Signs and Representations in Sign Language:
