Description:

The Department of Education is seeking to appoint a Research Associate in
Applied Linguistics to take up post from 1 January 2015 or as soon as possible
thereafter. 

The Department is proud to be recognised as one of the leading Education
Departments in the country and has undergone a substantial programme of
expansion in recent years. You will join the Centre for Language Learning
Research, whose staff enjoy an outstanding international reputation. You will
also be part of the Centre for Advanced Studies in Language and Communication,
whose members are leading experts in the field of Conversation Analysis. You
will work alongside colleagues to help strengthen further the reputation of
the Department through undertaking high quality research, assisting with the
managing of research projects, and helping to attract research funding. A key
element of the Research Associate’s role will be to support the research
programme of the Head of Department. Opportunities to contribute to teaching
on the Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes will be made
available.

The Main Purpose of the Role

- To undertake and contribute to high quality research under the supervision
of the Head of
Department and to contribute to the production of research outputs
- To assist in the identification and development of potential areas of
research and the development of proposals for independent or collaborative
research projects

Key Responsibilities or Duties

- To conduct individual and collaborative research projects, duties to
include:
- To contribute to the preparation of research proposals and applications to
external bodies
- To undertake appropriate organisational and administrative activities
connected to the research project, including conference organisation, and the
development of promotional or educational material including website
maintenance and development
- To develop and initiate collaborative working internally and externally,
duties to include:
- To provide guidance to other staff and students, as required, as well as
coordinating the work of small research teams.
- To assist with undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in own area of
expertise.
- To carry out other appropriate tasks as may be required by the Head of
Department.

Qualifications

- A Masters level degree (or equivalent) in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics,
Sociology or other relevant subject, with research experience
- A PhD in Applied Linguistics, Linguistics, Sociology or other relevant
subject
