“Towards Sustainable Learning in LSP & LAP ”

The desire to make learning “sustainable”, robust and resilient is at the heart of teaching in LSP / LAP (as we can see in recent European publications on lifelong learning). The English term “sustainability” implies the idea of a natural capital to be preserved, maintained, restored, managed or developed. The word “durabilité” is a recent import into French, and may be applied to teaching where tools and resources are provided with the aim of rendering the result and the process of learning permanent. 
The term sustainability calls to mind the idea of ecology, especially as described by Bronfenbrenner (1979, 1994). In its broadest sense, ecology applies to individuals within an ecosystem and the interactions between them, however language use and language learning being social actions, the question of exchanges between communities is also unavoidable. Thinking of LSP/LAP in terms of ecology has implications at all levels, from the individual and his or her interaction within language communities to the evolution of language itself (ecolinguistics), microsystems (schools, universities, families, etc.), macrosystems (culture, the economy, professional life, etc.).

Whereas the ideology of inbuilt obsolescence seems to be gaining ground in many areas of life, how can we think of learning and teaching languages in ways which will foster the development of durable skills so we can move towards inbuilt sustainability? This is the question which the 37th annual APLIUT conference will be exploring.

Call for Papers:

Papers in the area of sustainability and ecology may touch on the following topics, amongst others:

- How sustainability is represented by the various stakeholders within education and beyond
- Learning environments (technology, social networks, language centres, etc.)
- Different approaches to language teaching (project-based learning, games, action-oriented approach, CLIL , etc.)
- Different tools for assessment and certification, their roles and how they may be optimised in the context of sustainability
- The consequences of travel, exchange programmes, etc. on sustainable learning
- Preparing students for professional life
- How interdisciplinarity may improve sustainability
- The role of memory and memorisation
- Self-access, autonomy, motivation and self-regulation as key concepts for sustainable learning
- Following on from last year’s conference, the relationship between sustainability and success
