University or Organization: Sorbonne Paris Cité
Department: LABEX Empirical Foundations of Linguistics (EFL)
Job Location: Paris, France

Job Title: Research Engineer Contract
Job Rank: Other; Research Engineer

Specialty Areas: Phonetics

Description:

New EFL offer: research engineer contract - Physiological Data Acquisition and
Processing in Speech Production

The LabEx EFL (Empirical Foundations of Linguistics) seeks an engineer for a
12 month long, full time position (http://www.labex-efl.org/?q=fr/accueil).

Description of the Position

The post holder will be responsible for the elaboration of algorithms for
signal processing and for analysing heterogeneous data flux extracted from
acoustic, articulatory and physiological synchronized data (Ultrasound, camera
for lips, Electroglottography (EGG), sound microphone, nasal piezoelectric,
aerodynamic data and laryngeal imaging) to study speech and singing.

Context

Voice and speech assessment is a growing field and requires multiple
instrumentations. Clinical phonetics and medical sciences share the same
instrumentations to explore vocal function at the physiological, acoustical
and behavioural level. Physiological and articulatory data are still scarce
but complementary to acoustic cues. Our aim is to study the complexity of
speech production mechanisms as a whole, considering the coordination of
phonatory and articulatory behaviour in different phonation settings.

Candidate's Duty

The successful candidate will undertake experiments that consist in defining
parameters for acoustical and physiological data collection and designing
analysis methods for physiological data captured with different instruments
(lingual Ultrasound, camera for lips, electroglottography…) that can be
coupled and synchronized to better reflect the articulatory complexity of
speech production.

Candidate's Requirements

The successful candidate will have a PhD in Engineering in signal processing
(audio and video) with, if possible, some knowledge of experimental phonetics
and speech sciences.
- Computer knowledge for signal processing (script, C++, Matlab…)
- Experience in the acoustic analysis of speech
- Experience in articulatory investigation will be an advantage.
- Spoken and written English is strongly recommended.

Application Deadline: December 8th 2014 (midnight, Paris time)
Interviews: selected candidates will be interviewed from the 10th to the 12th
of December 2014.
Start of Contract: February 2nd, 2015
Salary: With respect to the University rules (around 2500€ gross salary)
Job Location: Laboratoire de Phonétique et de Phonologie (LPP), 19 rue des
Bernardins, 75005 Paris

Please email your CV, a motivation letter, and one letter of recommendation to
Lise Crevier Buchman and Martine Adda-Decker at the application emails below.

This offer can be directly found on the EFL website (below).
