Required Qualifications

Education & Experience: BS in computer science or other science, technology,
engineering, mathematics (STEM) field. Two years of work experience in the
areas of application/systems development, software engineering, and systems
architecture. 

Four years of work experience in the areas of areas of application/systems
development, software engineering, and systems architecture with a non-related
bachelor's degree. 

Understanding of Natural Language Processing and Computational Linguistics and
familiarity with the UIMA (Unstructured Information Management Architecture)
platform. 

Skills

Excellent analytical, technical and problem-solving skills. Ability to design
and develop well-integrated programs and systems that meet present and future
research needs. Ability to determine and implement a testing methodology and
manage the development and execution of comprehensive test plans. 

Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing scalable systems involving
interaction between server-based applications, web-based interfaces, and
databases. Strong programming skills in Java, and Python or Perl programming
languages. The successful candidate may be asked to demonstrate these skills
with sample code written in these languages in his or her programming
portfolio. 

Demonstrated ability to delegate and supervise the programming of application
components in collaboration with other team members (students, programmers,
etc.). Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Ability to lead
efforts in developing NLP systems and provide procedural and technical
guidance to less experienced staff. 

Position Responsibilities

The University of Minnesota is seeking a talented, pro-active, and innovative
individual to work as part of the College of Pharmacy and the Natural Language
Processing-Information Extraction (NLP-IE) research group in the Institute for
Health Informatics. This position will be embedded within the NLP-IE research
group and the individual hired for this position will work collaboratively on
further maturing our clinical natural language processing systems. The
successful candidate will work as part of a team and will be responsible for
developing a sustained IT infrastructure and contributing to the research
projects in support of the mission of the NLP-IE group. The successful
candidate will be expected to collaborate with other developers in the NLP-IE
group as well as broader University IT community including AHC-IS and the
University of Minnesota Supercomputing Facility. The person hired for this
position will be responsible for developing and maintaining NLP components
designed to support NLP-IE group's research activities on a number of funded
grants. The general responsibilities for this position are as follows: 

(40%) Conducts a full range of programming tasks to include program design,
program coding, debugging, and documentation for a variety of applications,
systems, or websites. 

(20%) Designs, implements, and executes test plans. Prepares systems test data
and prepares program documentation. 

(20%) Conducts analysis to determine and plan for new programs, system
integrations, or system upgrades. 

(10%) Gathers and interprets system requirements and develops detailed system
specifications. 

(10%) May lead small scale or sub-functional team for application development
or enhancement. Provides training and technical guidance to less experienced
staff.
