Meeting Description:

Workshop EUDIA-4 Linguistic Variation in Basque Language and Education
Bilbao, Basque Country
Jun 19, 2015

Regional variation (or dialectology) has a long tradition in the Basque language. However, recent decades have seen a rapid increase in insights into linguistic structure as well as advances in geographic technology and these two areas have not always been completely matched to each other, so that one might feel that current linguistic maps leave things to be desired on both sides. Many questions still arise. For instance, how regions can be identified from mapped data? How can geographic information systems best be applied to linguistic data? What can linguistic mapping learn from mapping techniques used in other fields of science? As far as sociolinguistic variation is concerned, although research about Basque is very recent and it is a growing field in the last few decades, many questions remain still unknown. An finally, how to teach linguistic variation at school? How and when do children realize linguistic variation? This workshop aims to bring together researchers with backgrounds in linguistic variation and in teaching linguistic variation in schools.
