Description:

The School of English at the University of Sheffield is delighted to announce that it can nominate nine students for White Rose PhD funding this year. Applications are now open at: http://wrocah.ac.uk/new-student/ahrc-competition/

The School has particular strengths in Language, Variation and Change, Historical Linguistics, Literary Linguistics, Language Acquisition, Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, Dialectology, Conversation Analysis, Syntax, and Discourse Analysis.

The School hosts several flourishing reading groups, including the Language Variation and Change group (hosted jointly with the University of Leeds), New Philologists, the L1/L2 Development and Linguistics group, and the Qualitative Methods reading group. Nine fully-funded PhD students started in September 2014. Recent PhD students have gone on to jobs in Lancaster, Birmingham, Liverpool, and Newcastle.

The White Rose College of the Arts and Humanities (http://wrocah.ac.uk/), comprising the universities of Sheffield, York and Leeds, is the best-funded Arts and Humanities doctoral training consortium in the UK, and is this year able to offer 54 funded PhD places, covering tuition fees for all EU students and (for home students) providing a bursary of £13,863.
