Meeting Description:

As part of a joint project on multilingual corpora between the universities of Limoges and Poitiers, the research groups FoReLL (Poitiers) and FRED (Limoges) are organizing a symposium on traces of the speaker’s subjectivity in texts, based on multilingual corpora (parallel and/or comparable) representing a variety of text types (literary, journalistic, academic or specialized texts).

Traces of subjectivity are to be seen as evidence of commitment of the speaker with respect to discourse content, as suggested by Denis Paillard in what he defines as « scène énonciative ».
The question of speaker subjectivity within the text, and of the representation of the speaker through texts, will be discussed from a variety of theoretical perspectives – enunciative, lexicological, pragmatic, syntactic, translation studies – and approached through different text types, encouraging the intersection of various approaches to a theme that has so far been largely unexplored from a contrastive corpus-based point of view, involving comparison between languages and text genres.

Call for Papers:

Topics addressed may include modality, qualification, reformulation, point of view, and argumentation. Among the possible aspects to be discussed, taking into account different types of corpora as well as specific features of texts and languages, reflections upon the speaker’s relation to discourse content (distancing, evaluation of appropriateness, emphasis etc.) could draw upon the examination of linguistic markers such as:

- Extraposed or cleft structures, approached from a syntactic or enunciative or pragmatic point of view in terms of variation of markers and of subjective values between languages; potential specialization according to text-type could also be addressed
- Framing markers, whether considered in lexicological, enunciative or pragmatic terms
- Typographical markers such as inverted commas as possible indications of the speaker’s reflection on his/her or others’ discourse, where a contrastive perspective may bring to light translation problems and strategies

Whatever theoretical or methodological perspective is chosen, a contrastive corpus-based approach is required, aimed at shedding new light on the question of speaker subjectivity in discourse.

Submission Procedure:

An abstract of around 500 words, clearly presenting the characteristics of the corpus used, the research question addressed and the theoretical approach, together with a few relevant references, should be sent to: raluca.nita at univ-poitiers.fr and ramon.marti-solano at unilim.fr before 31 December 2014.

Each abstract will be reviewed anonymously by two members of the scientific committee.

Languages of abstracts and presentations: French or English

Presentations: 25 minutes (+ 10 minutes for discussion)
The presentations will be submitted for publication after review by the scientific committee.
