Linguistic Field(s): Language Acquisition

Call Deadline: 15-Nov-2014

Meeting Description:

UiT The Arctic University of Norway is pleased to host a workshop entitled Multilingual Language Acquisition, Processing and Use. This workshop is the fourth in a series of successful meetings that took place in Stockholm (January 2009), Iowa City (June 2010) and Vitoria-Gasteiz (May 2012). Its main goal is to bring together researchers who are interested in multilingual acquisition, processing and language use of a third (L3) language and whose work is carried out within a formalized theory of language and whose approach is based in some application of cognitive science. The main motivation behind research done within cognitive approaches to L3 acquisition so far has been to find explanations for the complex cognitive nature of the multilingual mind, that is, how issues that have been dealt with in bilingualism would fare when one individual juggles three or more linguistic systems. We welcome work exploring acquisition and the role of previous linguistic experience at the initial stages of third language acquisition, in impact on development and ultimate attainment; work on the role of input (quality and quantity), linguistic and cognitive internal as well as other external variables; work on child and adult multilingualism; work using behavioural on-line and off-line as well as neurolinguistic methodologies, and work examining possible differences in bilingual type (early versus late) for acquiring, using and processing successive languages in adulthood.

Invited Speakers:

- Jennifer Cabrelli Amaro (University of Illinois at Chicago, USA)
- María del Pilar García Mayo (University of the Basque County, Spain)
- David Green (University College, London, UK)
- Holger Hopp (Mannheim University, Germany)
- Roumyana Slabakova (University of Southampton, UK)
- Stephanie Wulff (University of Florida, USA)

2nd Call for Papers and Posters:

Submission deadline: November 15, 2014
Notification: December 20, 2014

We seek high quality paper and poster presentations that contribute to the larger issues mentioned above, but also contributions that examine specific empirical questions related to the acquisition of L3/Ln morphosyntax, phonology, the lexicon, semantics and pragmatics from a cognitive perspective.

Abstracts must be 500 words or less (not including title, figures and references) and fit on one page, with a second page for data and references. Abstracts are due on November 15, 2014 and should be sent through the following Easychair website https://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=mlal3. Following peer review, a number of papers will be selected for oral or poster presentation.
