Meeting Description:

This one-day conference will offer new perspectives on how Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Cultural Studies can influence and improve the way we teach English in mainland China, Hong Kong and Macau. It should be of interest to all those who teach or intend to teach English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and to scholars in the fields of Linguistics, Applied Linguistics, and Cultural Studies interested in an interdisciplinary approach to the teaching of English in Hong Kong, Macau, and mainland China.

The conference will last for one day and consist of six presentations as well as an end-of-day roundtable. Participation is free though registration will be required.

Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University United International College (UIC), 28 Jinfeng Road, Tangjiawan, Zhuhai, Guangdong

The Institute of Cross-Cultural Studies (ICCS) and the Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) programme, UIC

Call for Papers:

Abstracts of papers (300 words in English), together with brief narrative bio-data in English (about 80 words), and contact information are hereby invited. The deadline for submitting abstracts/ proposals is 19 December 2014; all proposals should be submitted by email to tesl at uic.edu.hk. All submissions will be carefully reviewed by the Conference Academic Panel. Participants will be informed whether their proposal has been accepted by 23 January 2015.

Speakers should be prepared to speak for 25 minutes followed by 5 minutes of questions. All speakers will also be expected to participate in the end-of-day roundtable.

Speakers will be provided rooms in local hotels free of charge. Speakers will also receive assistance with travel costs within China, capped at 2000 RMB.

Conference Topics:

Presentations will cover areas in language, Applied Linguistics, Cultural Studies, and other areas relevant to teaching EFL, with particular reference to the Chinese context. A list of possible topics is shown below. Other topics will be considered if seen to be relevant to our main topic areas.
