Meeting Description:

Panel on Hip-hop Pedagogies organized within the following conference:

International Conference: The Sociolinguistics of Globalization: (De)centring and (de)standardization
The University of Hong Kong, 3-6 June 2015
http://www.sociolinguistics-globalization-hk2015.com/

Hip-hop culture challenges norms of language, literacy, identity and ownership through plurilingual, intertextual productions that shape and perform localised identities among youth (Newman 2005; Richardson 2006; Androtsopolous 2009). Contrary to global homogenising accounts of hip-hop culture, we view it as a localised social practice that (re)produces and transforms global practices as local expressions of identity and knowledge (Pennycook 2007). Drawing on these ideas, this panel aims to explore hip-hop culture as a site of pedagogy on specific social issues, complex literacy skills, creative expression, and language awareness (Morrell & Duncan-Andrade 2002; Hill 2009).

Call for Papers:

This panel will combine critical sociolinguistic and educational stances on the study of language and literacy rapping practices in formal and non-formal education settings. In particular, it seeks to gather together successful worldwide hip-hop-based educational experiences with young people that have engaged with multiple ways of speaking, writing, learning and reflecting in a globalising society. Contributions will jointly shed light on the process of recognising vernacular, non-powerful culture in learning settings and on the extent to which rapping practices can connect the ‘in’ and ‘out’ of school students’ lives in terms of literacy practices, local knowledge and social identities.

Interested participants can contact: Dr. Cristina Aliagas Marin at c.aliagas-marin at sheffield.ac.uk by September 27, 2014.
