Description:

The Department of Linguistics at the University of Illinois at
Urbana-Champaign invites applications for an Assistant, Associate, or Full
Professor (tenure-track/tenured) position in ESL testing/assessment, with a
target start date of August 16, 2015. The position will be a full-time, nine
month appointment, paid over twelve months. Salary will be commensurate with
experience. The candidate must demonstrate strength in language
testing/assessment. The candidate’s record should provide clear evidence of a
strong research program and an excellent research trajectory, and demonstrated
strength in obtaining external funding. 

Primary teaching responsibility for will relate to language
testing/assessment, with other graduate/ undergraduate courses to be
determined in consultation with the department head. The candidate will
contribute to the intellectual missions of the MA, MATESL, and PhD programs in
linguistics and the broader applied linguistics university community.

The candidate will also manage the university-wide English Placement Test
(EPT), which is administered to incoming international graduate and
undergraduate students who need ESL courses.

Required Qualifications
- A Ph.D or Ed.D in hand by the beginning of appointment, with specialization
in ESL testing/assessment
- Demonstrated evidence of a strong research program, including a publication
record and active research agenda related to ESL testing/assessment
- Evidence of excellence in teaching

Preferred Qualifications
- Research/publication in the area of Computer-Assisted Language Testing
- Research agenda that complements existing strengths of our faculty’s
research in diverse areas of applied linguistics, in particular second
language pedagogy, second language studies/acquisition, sociolinguistics and
discourse studies, and the Teaching of English as a Second Language
- Experience managing English Placement Tests

Evidence of active research agenda and strong commitment to innovative
teaching in an interdisciplinary context is expected at the assistant
professor level. At the associate level, a successful candidate will present
an established record of scholarly publications, grants and/or awards, and
demonstrated excellence in teaching and student mentoring at both the
undergraduate/graduate levels. A successful candidate at the full professor
level will fulfill the criteria for the previous ranks and also be of national
or international stature in the field.
